“SEARCHING FOR NORA” For more than 140 years, theater audiences worldwide have been riveted by A Doll’s House, Henrik Ibsen’s intimate story of a troubled marriage. The play’s bewitching lead, Nora Helmer, is one of the iconic women of modern literature. Walking out on her husband and young children as the final curtain falls, Nora leaves the audience wondering what will become of her.
In recent years, two American writers have sought separately to answer that question. This Saturday, the Brüka Theatre’s first-ever Book Club will explore both sequels: playwright Lucas Hnath’s A Doll’s House, Part 2, which is currently playing at the Bruka, and the novel Searching for Nora: After the Doll’s House, written by Reno writer Wendy Swallow.
Author, journalist and professor Wendy Swallow spent more than 10 years researching and writing her historical novel, seeking to be faithful to the historical realities of Ibsen’s time and to the complex character that Ibsen created. Swallow sends Nora on a journey that impoverishes and radicalizes her, sweeps her onto an emigrant ship bound for America, and strands her on the harsh Minnesota prairie. Nora is searching for family and purpose, but struggles to be honest in a hostile world.

Reno, NV. Brüka Theatre presents A Doll’s House, Part 2 written by Lucas Hnath. The play begins with a knock on the door — the same door that was slammed shut in the final scene of Ibsen’s 1879 groundbreaking masterwork. Nora Helmer made the shocking decision to leave her husband and children, and begin a life on her own. This climactic event—when Nora slams the door on everything in her life—instantly propelled world drama into the modern age. In A Doll’s House, Part 2, many years have passed since Nora’s exit. Now, there’s a knock on that same door. Nora has returned after 15 years. But why? And what will it mean for those she left behind?
